Accelerated Reader is a computer program that supplements the classroom reading programs and measures students' comprehension skills. The staff at William R. Davie Elementary School feels that participating in this program promotes a lifelong love of reading while it develops strong reading and comprehension skills.
The Accelerated Reading Program is very simple:
• Students select a book from the Accelerated Reader list on his/her reading level. Accelerated Reader
assigns a point value to each book based on the number of words and its reading level.
• The student reads the book ( or in the case of a new reader the book may be read to the student or with
the student)
• The student goes to the computer at school and takes a test on the book, either independently or with a
helper.
• Tests consist of five or ten questions covering important facts of the book.
• There is immediate feedback. The computer scores the test and awards the student points based on test
results.
• The program keeps a reading record for each child, offering important information to the teacher in
developing specific goals for their students in reading.
The Accelerated Reader Program makes reading fun. Please encourage all students to participate in this program. At present, William R. Davie has over 3,500 quizzes. Lists of our Accelerated Reader titles can also be found at the Davie County Public Library in Mocksville.
